Crocker Wins in Indonesia and becomes 4-time APRC Champion

E-mail Print PDF

By winning last weekends Rally Indonesia, Australian's Cody Crocker and Ben Atkinson became the first driver and co-driver in history to win the Asia Pacific Rally Championship driver's title four times.

Driving for the Singapore based Motor Image team Crocker has been unbeatable this year and continued that domination in South Sulawesi Indonesia, where the temperatures reached over 40 degrees and the conditions are mostly hot, dusty and rough.

However rain on day 1 caused havoc for the drivers with several causalities in the treacherous conditions but still Crocker continued to extend his lead.

Crocker was pushed hard throughout the rally by his rival Katsu Taguchi from Japan, but by the finish Crocker had edged ahead by over 1 minute and 29 seconds and celebrated his win and his 4th title back at the finish in the ancient city of Makassar.

The all girl crew of New Zealander Emma Gilmour and Claire Mole from Scotland were third continuing their run of podium finishes and cementing their place in the championship points.

Indonesian driver Rifat Sungkar was fourth and 3rd in the Asia Cup, while only half of the competitors finished the grueling event.

One leading casualty was Scotland's Alistair McRae in the Proton Satria S2000. After setting some very competitive times in the Satria, the Scot retired with power steering problems but with further development the car will be a real threat to the current Subaru domination.x
