V8 Supercars are returning to one of the country’s most famous racetracks with leading Australian retailer Dick Smith as the official naming rights sponsor of the Dick Smith Sandown 500.

V8 Supercars and Dick Smith have teamed up once again returning to Australia’s oldest motorsport circuit to pay homage to the legendary Australian Touring Cars.

The Dick Smith Sandown 500 in mid-September opens the endurance season as the main prelude to the 50th Anniversary of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. It is also the 50th running of Australian Touring Cars at the Sandown circuit in inner-Melbourne.

V8 Supercars CEO David Malone said it was great to see an Australian retail icon teaming up for a classic Australian motorsport event.

“Dick Smith has been a long time supporter of Australian motorsport and coming on board for a traditional event strengthens the relationship between Dick Smith and V8 Supercars,” Mr Malone said.

“It’s great to return to the traditional circuit of the Australian Touring Cars, and what better way then to do it with a big name Australian company.

“The Dick Smith Sandown 500 will be a weekend that pays homage to the Australian Touring Cars, and is the opening of the Endurance Season and the warm up for Bathurst.”

Tyson White, Dick Smith Merchandise Manager says: “We have chosen to sponsor the Sandown 500 V8 as it’s a perfect fit for Dick Smith, it’s a truly national sport which is increasingly growing in popularity. The Dick Smith Sandown 500 is the first enduro round of 2012 which is set to thrill visitors by providing them with a packed schedule of V8 Supercars and entertainment.”

The Dick Smith Sandown 500 marks 50 years since the opening of the legendary Australian circuit, and patrons can expect a weekend fuelled with traditional Australian Motorsport with support categories such as Formula Ford, Touring Car Masters and Group A and C Touring Cars.

Adding to the on track entertainment there will be the Disney Pixar’s Cars Truck Tour and a family zone which includes jumping castles, Scouts Victoria and Car displays.

There is something for everyone as the cars return to Sandown at the Dick Smith Sandown 500.
