V8 Supercar driver Paul Weel is expected to be cleared of any serious injury following a heavy accident during practice at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama this morning.
Weel, 29, had to be extracted from his V8 Supercar after an accident with Team Kiwi Racing driver Chris Pither that left him with lower back pain.
He was airlifted to a nearby hospital (yet to be determined at the time of issue) for precautionary tests.
The accident occurred near the McPhillamy Park area of the Mount Panorama circuit.
Weel had made contact with a safety barrier and slid sideways onto the track.
Pither approached from behind and collided with the rear drivers’ side door.
Pither walked away unhurt. Weel was fully conscious throughout the extrication and talking to the medical team.
The lower back pain meant the medical team decided to airlift the PWR driver.
Both cars have been withdrawn from the weekend due to the extensive damage.
