Nick Foster to make Porsche City Index Carrera Cup debut

Nick Foster will make his Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia debut this weekend at the Sydney Telstra 500 at Sydney Olympic Park in New South Wales.

The 19-year-old Queenslander will drive Porsche Cars Australia’s guest car at the final round of the championship, with backing from Fujitsu General Australia Limited.

Foster has been a part of the inaugural Fujitsu ‘Cool’ Driver Program in 2011. He will also carry backing from long-time supporter Steeline at the Sydney Olympic Park street circuit.

Foster won the final round in this year’s Australian Formula Ford Championship at Symmons Plains Raceway in Launceston, Tasmania two weeks ago, finishing third in the overall points standings.

Sonic Motor Racing has prepared the car for Foster’s campaign in Sydney, the guest car previously driven this season by Mark Skaife at Albert Park and Mark Noske at Townsville.

Foster has raced with the Sonic team for the past two seasons in Formula Ford. The team has a strong history in the Porsche Carrera Cup, highlighted by championship victory in 2007 with driver David Reynolds.

NICK FOSTER - #60 Fujitsu Porsche 911 GT3 Cup:

“This is a massive opportunity for me,” said Nick Foster.

“I finished my Formula Ford career off at Tassie with a win, so we're coming off a bit of a high.

“To get this opportunity is great and I have to thank Fujitsu for continuing to back me and the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup for helping me put this deal together.

“It's a bit of a reward for the hard work we've put into making this happen. This has been on the go since about July so it's been very hard work and a long time in the making but it's finally all come together and I've got a lot of people to thank for that.”

QUESTION: How do you think you will adjust from the Formula Ford to the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car?

“We took the car to Winton for a test last week. The day wasn't ideal as it was raining for the whole morning and some of the afternoon.

“Luckily the track dried up somewhat in the afternoon and we got some dry laps in.

“Obviously the limited track time was not ideal but I felt comfortable in the car and I picked up the driving style more and more with every lap.

“I'm looking forward to getting some more laps under my belt at Homebush. I'm not going into Sydney with any massive expectations.

“I've been speaking to a few people I know like Daniel Gaunt and David Reynolds who have a lot of experience in Porsches. They have been willing to give me a bit of a hand with some tips here and there.

“It’s different to what I’m used to so I have to be smart about it. There are other guys out there with championships on the line so I don't want to get involved in all that sort of stuff with them. I just want to go out there and do the best I can do, roll the car out for each session and bring it back, learn a lot and see how we go.”

QUESTION: Is the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia an option for you in 2012?

“This is a massive opportunity for me and this does become an option for 2012. But at this point in time it's more of a reconnaissance mission, just to see what direction we want to head in next year.

“Everything next year is still up in the air but it’s nice to put something together before the end of this year to try and put a step forward towards something that could be a great option for next year. It's a great championship and it's one of the options I'm aiming for in 2012.”
