Bathurst 12 Hour announces Official Charity

The Bathurst 12 Hour Showroom Enduro has given the “thumbs up” to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia as the official charity for the production based motor racing endurance event to be held 12 – 14 February 2010.

The Foundation is funding research into the cause, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. Bathurst 12 Hour Promoter James O’Brien is confident collaboration with the Event will help aid this.

“It’s a very important cause and we are glad to recognise the Foundation as our official charity. I’m confident that competitors and visitors will all get behind this great cause,” said O’Brien.

Prostate Cancer NSW State Manager Wendy Farrow will head up the awareness and activities that will run over the weekend and is pleased to be a part of the Event.

“It’s our first time at the Event and we are very excited.  It’s a great opportunity to connect with men on a valuable message.”

There will be many activities run over the weekend including a free health check.

“It’s going to be a chance for men to stop in for a pit stop at our specially marked zone for a free health check and information about prostate cancer,” Farrow explained.

“Men are good at putting their car in for a service but they just need to remember to check in with the doctor as well.”

Members of the local prostate support group will also be present over the weekend.

More information is available through Bathurst Regional Councilor Ian North’s office ian.north@bathurst.nsw.gov.au.

North along with fellow Bathurst Councilor Bobby Bourke has come up with a “Tie Challenge initiative” to support the cause. Their aim is to collect 6,500 ties and hang them around Mount Panorama the day before the Event (Thursday, 11th February, 2010).

“We figure each tie is about 1 metre long so we would need about 6,500 ties. The Regional NSW Fire Service is on board and we already have 4,000 ties,” explained Cr North.

Cr North is excited by the idea and is aiming to set a Guiness World Record.

“This has never been done before so we are planning to make it into the Guiness Book.”

“ The Council has been great. It’s about time we raised some awareness out there and get more guys involved in the cause,” said Cr North.

Bathurst residents can donate ties at the Community Op Shop or Bathurst Regional Council. Ties can also be mailed to Cr Ian North, PO Box 883, Bathurst, NSW, 2796.

The Bathurst 12 Hour Showroom Enduro is now in its 4th year, with a grid of over 50 cars expected to compete. The race features production cars in a class structure representative of the mass road going market. BMW, Mitsubishi, Ford, Holden, Nissan and Subaru are expected to compete for outright honours, while an Alternative Energy class is open to diesel, hybrid and LPG entries.

The event will be televised in a 3 hour special on the SEVEN Network, through Fox Sports, New Zealand and other International Markets.
