Rhys Newman has tested a Formula 3 car with Adelaide based team, R-Tek. Newman drove the teams Dallara F304 Spiess Opel at Mallala Motor sport Park, located to the North of Adelaide under the watchful eye of R-Tek supremo; Ian Richards. Newman successfully completed some 50 laps of the 2.6 Kilometre circuit over 6 sessions.“The young lad put in a very good performance, followed instructions and did exactly what he was told to do,” said Richards. “Jumping into one of these cars is a huge leap from what he has been driving and with the exception of one minor “off” he handled the car, the team environment and himself very well. At 15 years of age, I believe he is the youngest person in the country to have tested a Formula 3 car“ Richards went on to say. “It was obvious that he has built a solid foundation of skills over the many years he has been competing and he put them to excellent use here today. He has a lot of potential and I would very much like to continue working with him.”
Newman has spent 2009 campaigning the Formula Vee of 1979 Australian Grand Prix Winner; John Walker. He has put his car on pole 3 times so far this season and stood on the podium 3 weeks ago at Mallala after winning a round at Winton in June. He currently sits in equal first place in the Shannon’s Nationals series and third in the South Australian Motor Racing Championships.
I’m very grateful to Ian for the opportunity,” said Newman. “There was a lot to take in, and the whole team was great to work with. I’m also hopeful of a Formula Ford test at Winton which is slated for later this month,” said Newman. “Being able to test these cars will give us the basis for our decisions for where we will be in 2010”.
